What I couldn’t say, I created…
“The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance…”

MJ Peláez
MJ Peláez was born in New York in 1982, but moved to Mexico at a young age and was raised with the magic of its culture. Even though she never truly dedicated herself to painting until a couple of years ago, she’s always worked on the artistic side of her creative views. Peláez has a condition called synesthesia which allows her to dive in an immensity of colorful possibilities with every spoken word. She took drawing lessons as a kid, but diverged into writing instead. Always exploring on creating, she chose a career in literature and philosophy at the university of monterrey. Still digging for depth of meaning, she did a masters in neuropsychology, but it wasn’t until she took a leap on painting that she found true meaning of self.
Peláez is an artist inspired by everyone and everything around her. She soaks up her environment and studies everything with the intention of portraying it on canvas… always. It’s a constant unrevolving state of being. Learning everyday day with a trial and error method, MJ has found guidance in absorbing information from tutorials and lessons made by a collection of artists; she wouldn’t call herself “self-taught”. She’s had an improvised training path which has led her to paint with a variety of techniques.
MJ considers painting to be a true reflection of an inner struggle against reality. Peacefully enticing, she believes art should have a pull on those that feel a connection with what they’re appreciating.
She has an acrylic technique that takes you to an endless whirlpool of elaborate forms and colors. Reflecting a mesmerizing world that pulls you in and awakens an urge to indulge some more. Her oil technique, on the other hand, bewilders the uncanny. Where you may find the connection with your inner thoughts unsettling, but somehow you won’t stop watching until enlightenment takes place.
Still a long way to go, MJ Peláez promises a surreal world of wonderment, hoping to intertwine the perplexing struggle between fantasy and reality.
